I think it's still fair to blame JYP, considering they (not he, JYPE) keep throwing different producers on them. And I think this is part of the reason why. Their fanbase is solid but it's silly to act like their popularity with the general public hasn't dwindled, at least a bit. So I don't think we should be blaming the producers (JYP seems to get the blame a lot) because they're trying their best to find a sound that will be more popular but still play to their strengths.

This is a really ranty post and I haven't edited it yet so if something doesn't make sense feel free to point it out. That's why I think GOT7 is doing well with their fanbase (don't get me wrong, they're successful), but their popularity with the public HAS been dwindling, at least after Lullaby if not earlier. But in both cases, you either get a less popular but better song, or a more known but worse song. Then when they focus on their weaker aspects, it gives them a more interesting musical identity.
Because when they play to their strengths, it's not interesting enough or strong enough. So perhaps that's why their seemingly "less liked" songs get more attention, and their "better" songs (YCMN) get less. While that's probably GOT7's best quality, other groups do it better. Their "strength" isn't as "strong" as other group's "strengths" if that makes sense. I think I have a reason for this but it's kinda mean. But when they actually use JB/JY's vocals well, the song charts worse. Unfortunately, their rapping is subpar and when focused on more heavily (see: Hard Carry) the result is less liked. GOT7's strengths come in JB and jinyoung's vocal tones - very R&B-like. So it's kinda a trade off.īasically, my point is. However, You Calling My Name didn't chart as well as some of their other songs and has less UL's.
This is the sound I think they should continue with. And YCMN is a lot of people's favourite title tracks of theirs. Eclipse appears to be one of their most disliked tracks to date, so I won't go into that. I think - with Lullaby, they were almost there. Then we come to their most recent 3 comebacks, "Lullaby," "Eclipse," and "You Calling My Name." Lullaby and Eclipse were produced outside of JYP as far as I know, and Lullaby was liked on release. While those songs are looked back on in a more positive light, they also performed worse chart and sales-wise as far as I know. For a while when JB started producing their music, the same issue persisted. Then their songs became angsty, rap-heavy, dance-heavy - "If You Do," "Hard Carry," "Never Ever," and again - with the exception of If You Do, the other two songs have become rather disliked over time. They did more fun concepts like "Just Right," "A," "Stop Stop It," but nowadays those songs aren't looked back on very fondly by a lot of people. This is probably why they've switched sounds so much - not only because of switching producers, but it's becoming a neverending search for a concept/sound that they excel with. So, for their music, I can't think of a particular characteristic they could show off. But they aren't outstanding vocally, certainly not outstanding rap-wise, and while as a group they're pretty good dancers, most groups that debuted around their time also had this quality, sometimes to a greater extent. I'm not saying they aren't talented by the way, don't misconstrue that. I could keep making examples of these.įor me personally, I don't see one particular concept OR area GOT7 excels in. As such, while she was at JYP, that was the kind of music she made as a soloist because he knew she was good at it and he knew she would be successful with it. For example: Sunmi excelled at "sexy" concepts, or more sensual songs/choreo. A lot of groups have one particular concept, or at least one particular THING they excel at, that is taken advantage of in their music.

I'm ready to get a lot of criticism for this.Ī lot of GOT7 fans claim that JYP should stop producing their music and leave it to JB, because JYP doesn't "know how to produce music for GOT7." I have a counter argument to this.
